About Lesson

A URL tracking template is a piece of code that you can add to your Google Ads account to track the performance of your ads and measure the effectiveness of your campaigns. It’s a URL that includes parameters that are used to track data such as the source of the click, the keyword that triggered the ad, and the ad position.

To create a URL tracking template in Google Ads, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account.

  2. Click on “Settings” in the left-hand menu, then click on “Account Settings.”

  3. Under “Tracking,” click on “URL options.”

  4. Click the “Edit” button next to “Tracking template.”

  5. Enter your tracking template URL. The template should include the parameters you want to track, such as {campaignid}, {adgroupid}, {keyword}, and {matchtype}. For example, your tracking template might look like this:

http://www.example.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={creative}

  1. Click “Save.”

Once you’ve created your tracking template, you can use it to track the performance of your ads and measure the effectiveness of your campaigns. When a user clicks on your ad, the tracking parameters will be appended to the URL, and you’ll be able to see the data in your Google Analytics account or other tracking tool.

It’s important to note that the tracking template should only include the parameters you want to track, and shouldn’t include any additional information that could potentially confuse users or cause errors. Additionally, it’s a good idea to test your tracking template to make sure it’s working correctly before launching your ad campaign.
